Custom Furniture for Small Apartments
In a small apartment, every square metre pays rent twice. The furniture that earns its keep isn't just smaller — it's built to fit the space exactly, so nothing is wasted and nothing fights the room.
A narrow hallway becomes storage, seating and a mirror in one built-in unit.
Small apartments reward one design habit above all: building to the millimetre. Off-the-shelf wardrobes leave gaps at the top and sides; standard shelves waste wall height; shoe cabinets take up floor space that a hallway doesn't have. Custom furniture closes those gaps — literally.
Start With the Entryway
The hallway is usually the most cramped, most used space in a small flat. One built-in unit can hold a shoe cabinet, a bench, hooks and a mirror in the width of a single door:
- Shoe cabinet — ventilated shelves sized to your shoe count, not a standard depth
- Bench with lift-up storage — seating for putting shoes on, plus hidden storage inside
- Wall hooks and a mirror — above the bench, zero extra floor space
- LED strip under the bench — a small light that makes a narrow hall feel bigger
Wardrobes That Reach the Ceiling
The single biggest win in a small bedroom is a wardrobe that goes floor-to-ceiling. The top 30–40 cm of every room is dead space in most apartments — a built-in captures it for seasonal storage. Just as important, a wardrobe that touches the ceiling reads as architecture, not furniture, which makes the room feel taller and calmer.
A floor-to-ceiling wardrobe turns dead wall space into a full season of storage.
Bookshelves That Double as Walls
In an open-plan studio, a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf can work harder than a wall: it stores, it displays, and it quietly divides the room. We build the shelves to your wall's exact width and height, with closed cabinets at the bottom for the things you'd rather hide and open shelves above for display.
A full-height shelf wall stores a studio's worth of books without a single free-standing unit.
Pet Corners in Small Spaces
If a cat or small dog shares the apartment, their things take up floor space too. The fix is the same: build pet furniture into the space instead of adding more free-standing pieces. A corner cat tree uses the vertical strip above a shelf; a litter box cabinet doubles as a bathroom cabinet; a feeding station tucks into a kitchen gap that would otherwise stay empty.
What to Avoid in a Small Room
- Free-standing shelves that stop 40 cm below the ceiling
- Wardrobes that leave a gap at the top — it just collects dust
- Deep units that eat walkway space — build to your room's real depth instead
- More furniture pieces than the room needs — one multi-purpose built-in beats three single-purpose units

One Built-In, Three Jobs
The most effective habit in small apartments is combining functions before adding pieces. A single wall of built-ins can hold a desk that folds away, closed storage for the printer and cables, and open shelves for display — three jobs, one footprint. In a kitchen, a tall cabinet that reaches the ceiling stores pantry items above and appliances below, saving a free-standing cabinet's worth of floor. When you plan around the room's dead zones — corners, the wall above a door, the strip under a window — the apartment suddenly has storage it didn't seem to have.
Measuring a Small Room Properly
Small rooms punish guessing more than large ones: a 5 cm error in a tight hallway is the difference between a built-in that fits and one that blocks the door. Measure height in three places (rooms are rarely level), width at top, middle and bottom, and note skirting boards, sockets and pipes before you order. If that sounds familiar, our measuring guide walks through it in twenty minutes — and it applies to every room in the flat, not just bedrooms.
